Sárospatak-2007

Sárospatak is the home of my Hungarian ancestors. My grandmother Julia Brown and grandfather Carl Schwartz (aka Marki Kalman) were born in this little town on the Bodrog River in the state of Zemplen, Hungary. They would not say much about their town. And only after returning from our visit, did we discover why.

We discovered that although Sárospatak was a very well known city in the 18th and 19th century, and was called the "Athens of Europe", its history in the Holocaust was tragic and horrifying to its Jewish residents.
