Partisans

The Hungarian Resistance graphic history is a chapter from the book PARTISANS edited by historian Paul Buhle.

PARTISANS (2025, Between the Lines Press, Toronto) offers a glimpse, through comic art, at the vast resistance to Nazi domination of Europe from behind the lines: those who suffered, those who fought back, and those who struggled to help, from far away. The comic pages by Sander Feinberg and (artist) Summer McClinton are among the most stirring in this important book. Paul Buhle

Background Story of The Hungarian Resistance

Many of you know I have been working on a book for almost ten years. It tells the story of my grandfather and three of his friends and their remarkable lives. They were each successful in their careers and came together to help working families (especially in unions) in the U.S. and to fight fascism as it developed in the 1930s resulting in the horrors of World War II.

Last year, my friend, historian Paul Buhle, who has read several chapters of my book, asked me to write a chapter on Hungary in the book he edited called Partisans about the fight against Nazism in Europe. He connected me with a fabulously talented artist, Summer McClinton who brought the story to life.

My story in Partisans is based on several chapters in my upcoming book. It was quite a writing challenge to tell the story succinctly. It describes the lead-up to the authoritarian takeover of Hungary followed by its collaboration with Germany. Germany eventually invaded Hungary leading to the murder of almost 70% of Hungarian Jews. My graphic history tells the fascinating stories of Hungarian-Americans fighting fascism in the U.S. and the young resisters in Hungary who helped save the lives of thousands of Jewish refugees during World War II.

A few months ago I printed some prototypes and got wonderful, positive feedback, so I decided to fund a full printing on Kickstarter. In less than 30 days we became 320% funded!

Now you can get your own copy here.

And Partisans is now available with ten other intriguing stories.

I continue to work on my book Hungarian-American Heroes which is the source for the stories in the comic book.

And I have created a publishing collective, Open Thought Press, to support self-published authors. You can lean more about it here.
