Hugo Gellert-Julius Zilser

I solved a mystery for the Smithsonian! I noticed a photo of Hugo Gellert on the Archives of American Art site and realized I had seen it before.

They had no idea who Hugo was standing with. But I did! Hugo is one of the four main subjects of my book.

I wrote them the following email and they updated their website.

Please see the attached photo from “This Noble Flame” which confirms that this is Julius (Gyula) Zilzer at their joint exhibit in 1960. G.D. Hackett took most of the contemporary photos in the book and was also a friend of Hugo.

Zilzer and Gellert had more than art in common: they were both devoted to ending fascism and creating world peace.
